OUR PHILOSOPHY
In the Grammar Program, children are naturally inquisitive and excel in learning new information. They are both willing and able to memorize a vast amount of information. We teach to these strengths laying the foundation for future academic success.
Students begin by learning the fundamental facts and rules of each subject. Teaching methods such as singing, memorizing, chanting, and recitation are emphasized. During this stage, a child develops an appetite or love for learning. An inquiring mind drives the investigation and exploration that results in learning. It is important to provide the child time for play and investigation, as well as quality material and living books to explore. The students exit the Grammar Stage with the tools needed for self-education. A hallmark of our program is the integration of subjects to create a meaningful context for learning and exploration. Each academic year, we strive to integrate the study of nature, history, art and artist studies, language, classic literature, and Latin in meaningful ways. No subject is taught in isolation.
SUBJECTS
Phonics and Spelling
K4-2nd Grade students explore the symbols and sounds of the English language to build early reading and spelling skills. Classic storybooks and chapter books are used for early reading practice. Our consistency throughout these Lower School years allows the students plenty of time to master the elements and become confident in their reading, spelling, and writing.
Science
Our K4–6th grade science program follows a classical approach that encourages students to explore God’s creation through the study of life, earth, physical, and space sciences. Using engaging readings, hands-on experiments, nature study, and scientific observation, students develop curiosity, critical thinking, and a solid understanding of the world around them.
Each year builds upon the last, providing a strong foundation for future scientific study while inspiring a lifelong love of learning.
Literature
From an early age, students learn to understand the elements of a story. From learning Onomatopoeia through exploring Blueberries with Sal to understanding the complex themes of Jane Eyre, students are taught to evaluate context, rising action, theme and other story elements using classical methods.
Students are taught the skills of copywork, narration, and dictation as a foundational step to more complex written tasks. Writing is further addressed through the teaching of the classical progymnasmata.
Languages
Latin begins in Kindergarten with the teaching of vocabulary through song. Over the first several years, the focus remains on learning vocabulary and Latin endings through these enjoyable songs. As students begin a more formal study of English Grammar in third grade, they also learn the early elements of Latin grammar.
Teaching the skills alongside one another enhances understanding of both subjects. This method leads to a deeper understanding of English sentence structure, allowing students to excel in English and foreign language studies as they enter the Upper School Program.
Mathematics
Our Pre-K through 2nd grade students receive a strong foundation for number sense and math strategies through Al Abacus, games, and activities. This multi-sensory approach allows students with various learning styles to builds skills and confidence in the area of mathematics.
3rd-6th grade students are taught from a rigorous, yet engaging math curriculum that teaches higher-order reasoning, logical thinking, and deep conceptual understanding through vibrant graphic novels, challenging puzzles, and interactive online features.
History
Our K4–6th grade history program follows a chronological, classical approach that brings the story of civilization to life through engaging narratives, maps, timelines, biographies, and hands-on activities.
Because all elementary grades study the same historical time period each year, family discussions, reading at home, and educational field trips become more meaningful and enjoyable. Students gain a deeper understanding of God’s providential hand throughout history while building a strong foundation for future studies.
