RHETORIC PROGRAM
7th-12th Grade
OUR PHILOSOPHY
The Rhetoric Program encompasses the dialectic and rhetoric stages of learning. At Clemson Area Classical Academy, these years are seen as a time to equip students with the tools of logic and the art of rhetoric while developing a passion for learning that will carry them through college and beyond.
Logic
Students enter this stage as they leave childhood and exit the stage as they become young adults. Students transition from more concrete thinking in the School of Grammar to more analytical thinking that questions, challenges, and tests what they are learning. A less formal, more Socratic method of teaching is used in this stage to draw students into discussion, dialogue, and debate. This allows the students to become active self-learners and critical thinkers while developing time management and organizational skills that are critical for later success. Learning to think and debate critically and logically is a skill that will help them excel academically in high school and beyond.
Rhetoric
Students in the Rhetoric Program are challenged to go deep into subject matter using the Socratic Method of questioning and discussion-based classroom techniques. The Rhetoric Program consists of smaller classes with high teacher-student interaction. In a Rhetoric class, one will find engaged discussions, persuasive student presentations, and lively classroom debates, which challenge each student to think critically and speak persuasively to justify their beliefs. The students are taught how to argue persuasively and winsomely to defend their beliefs.
While our Seneca campus serves students through 12th grade, our new Powdersville campus will initially serve students through 7th grade, with plans to expand into the upper grades as enrollment and community interest grow. SUBJECTS
Literature, Logic & Rhetoric
Our literature program invites students to engage with classic works that complement their study of world and American history. Through rich discussions, thoughtful writing, and literary analysis, students explore timeless themes, develop discernment, and grow in their ability to think critically from a biblical worldview.
As students advance, formal instruction in logic and rhetoric equips them to reason carefully, communicate persuasively, and defend truth with wisdom and grace.
Science
Upper School students explore God’s creation through the study of Earth Science, Biology, and Chemistry. Classroom instruction is paired with hands-on laboratory experiences that encourage curiosity, careful observation, and critical thinking.
As students grow in their scientific understanding, they also develop the analytical skills and confidence needed for college-level study and a wide range of future pursuits.
History
Our Upper School history program helps students understand the people, events, and ideas that have shaped our world. Through a chronological study of world and American history, students engage with historical narratives, primary sources, maps, and thoughtful discussion while developing strong analytical and writing skills from a biblical worldview.
As students progress through the upper grades, they also have opportunities to complete AP Government and AP Human Geography, preparing them for college-level academics.
Languages
Language study begins with Latin, giving students a strong foundation in vocabulary, grammar, and language structure while strengthening their understanding of the English language.
Beginning in 8th grade, students build on that foundation as they study Spanish, developing practical communication skills and a greater appreciation for other cultures.
Mathematics
Mathematics is taught with an emphasis on understanding, reasoning, and problem-solving rather than simple memorization. Through courses including Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II, students build a strong foundation in mathematical thinking while learning to approach complex problems with confidence and precision.
By encouraging logical reasoning and perseverance, our math program prepares students for higher-level coursework and equips them with skills that extend well beyond the classroom.
Flexible Enrollment
CCA currently offers two models for Rhetoric Program Students:
1. Students may enroll in all classes following our Curriculum Guide.
2. Students may enroll in individual classes based on their current needs.
